June 16th, 2007: Mountain Mirage hosts the second annual Isenfir Day in the Middle East!

Come join us for the second annual Isenfir Day in the Middle East!
This is an event where the folks from the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism, www.sca.org) and the folks from the local Middle Eastern style dance and music community can come together and share a day of fun in the sun!!

There will be classes on :
  • Drumming, basic and intermediate middle eastern rhythms
  • Drum circle etiquette for dancers and drummers
  • "What is a drum circle and where can I find one?....." aka "where can I find something this awesome on a regular basis?"
  • Differences between dance styles, ie... American, Egyptian, Turkish, Folkloric, "Scadian"... ect...
  • Costuming for Middle Eastern personas, dancers, drummers, and everyday life in the medeival middle east.
  • Bellydance Myths, what is the real deal?"
  • And much, much more!
Later on, at O'Dark thirty... (aka, dusk..) we will have an awesome Drum Circle by firelight!! Aka.... very informal HAFLA!!
Last year's music was really incredible and we kept it up into the wee hours, it was a little chilly though, this year it should be nice and warm!!

So, bring yourself, some fun dance stuff (zills, skirt, veil, props, poi.. whatever), and come on out and express yourself!! Meet others in the community! Put faces with the names we see on Tribe and Cvameda and the Isenfir lists! Enjoy good food, great music, and incredible atmosphere!!

I will post more as the class schedule becomes more concrete!

Dancers, Drummers, Musicians, curious fans of the art form!! Come one and all and learn some of the history behind the mystery!!

April 19th, 2007: Raquy and the Cavemen

Raquy and the Cavemen are coming back to Charlottesville! On Thursday, April 19th they will be rocking the Gravity Lounge! Raquy is one of the best touring mid-eastern percussionists in this country, so if you are into drumming, mid-eastern music, or dance, then this is one show you won't want to miss!

Central Virginia's bellydancers converge to rock Lovingston at Rapunzel's twice a year. This show will include performances by Jai, Shaheen, Mountain Mirage, Fata Morgana, Shakti and more! This show is always packed so show up early if you want a seat!

January 1st, 2007: Bellydance Costuming Workshop

Bellydance Costuming Workshop
On January 1st, from 6-9 PM, there will be a free Bellydance Costuming party/workshop/swap meet at the ATTiC where we will get together to have fun, snack, listen to music, play dress up & trade with friends. We’ll chat and explore developing looks that match your personality and maximize your favorite features.
So raid your closet and bring anything you find. Experienced costumers will be on-hand to help you put it all together!

Friday, October 20th: Raquy and the Cavemen

Raquy and the Cavemen are coming back to Charlottesville! They packed Gravity Lounge last year, and on Friday, October 20th they will be rocking the Satellite Ballroom! Raquy is one of the best touring mid-eastern percussionists in this country, so if you are into drumming, mid-eastern music, or dance, then this is one show you won't want to miss. These master musicians will be giving a drum workshop from 6:30 - 8:30, followed by an excellent show featuring bellydancers Shakti, Amalia, and Batsheva. The show is $8 & the workshop + show is $20.

September 2nd: Basil

Shakti will be performing at Basil Mediterranean Bistro at 8:00 PM this Saturday. Basil is a popular restaurant located on the UVA corner next door to Sakura. It features excellent mediterranean fusion cuisine in an attractive, trendy, and friendly atmosphere.

August 27th: "Arabian Nights" A showcase of bellydance featuring

All of these fabulous dancers will be performing on one stage on August 27th, 2006 at the Scottsville Community Center beginning @ 2:00 p.m. Tickets are $15 at the door.

May 20th: Middle Eastern SCAdian extravaganza

Join us for an afternoon of medieval middle eastern demonstations, classes, and introduction to the Middle Eastern aspects of the SCA. Pictures of medieval middle eastern dancers and their clothing, ancient styles of dance, origins of dances, and demos of different dance styles will abound. Mini-informal classes in each style will be held as well as a drum class for beginners.

There will even be a henna party with light refreshments and a potluck dinner. There will also be a trading circle, so feel free to bring any fanciful skirts, accessories, and costuming items that you might want to trade.

The Shire of Isenfir has graciously volunteered to do demos of thrown weapons and archery, and we may even get a heavy fighting or rapier demo if anyone is interested, also various other periods/areas of garb will be worn by shirelings. They have voluteered to put up a pavillion for food, and one for dance.. with rugs and all... All of this to be followed up in the evening with a genuine hafla, Scadian style... live drumming and dancing starting at o'dark-thirty.

This event will be held in Charlottesville, out near the Boar's Head Inn, off of 250, at the Oxford's farm. They have a huge beautiful lawn, with a couple of shade trees, and lots of space for activities! Classes will be taught by Kreela, Lou, and Jennifer of Mountain Mirage, Shaheen, Shakti, and Alex. Music provided by Jim Gagnon, Danny & Kevin Kartheiser of Cinnamon Phoenix, Witt, Kat, Sarah, and Waian.

May 6th: Rob Chaffinch & friends at Rapunzel's

What do Fata Morgana, Cinnamon Phoenix, and Junior Moment have in common? Why, the fabulously skilled Rob Chaffinch of course! Witness him switch effortlessly from doumbek to oud to guitar as Rapunzel hosts all of his musical projects in a single evening of music & dance entertainment.

April 22nd: Dogwood Parade

Shakti joins her students, Mountain Mirage, and other Charlottesville bellydancers aboard the "Charlottesville Bellydance" Float at Charlottesville's annual Dogwood Festival parade.

April 8th: Midnight at the Oasis: Program Notes

Send your camel to bed! Then join us for a sumptuous feast under a Bedouin tent and enjoy food and entertainment with an Arabic flair. The tent will be layered with oriental carpets and decorated with tropical plants, pit fires, and torches. The feast includes skewered lamb, stuffed dates, goat cheese, hummus, lentils and other Moroccan and Mediterranean fare. Cinnamon Phoenix will provide the entertainment for an exotic evening full of fun. So plan to slip off to our sand dune and kick up a little dust. Party Parade 2006 promises an experience befitting a sultan!

Feb 17th: Katrina Benefit & Dance

Shakti performs with the Temple of Isis Dancers at the Hurricane Katrina Benefit & Dance at the Doubletree Hotel. Come in costume to this mardi-gras party and dance to the music of John D'Earth & the Charlottesville Swing Orchestra.

January 27th: Hafla at Rapunzel's

Central Virginia's finest dancers display their talents at Rapunzels twice a year. This show will include performances by Mountain Mirage, Shakti & her students, Bahira, Jai, Jaylah, Aysel, Amalia and more!
